Critical Perspectives on Childhood and Pedagogy

Private Group active 5 years, 10 months ago

The course brings together two fields of study: critical childhood studies and critical educational theory and practice. Using early childhood education discourse as the focal point, students consider and re-imagine processes of socialization and child development. Rather than characterizing children as “incomplete” en route to becoming adults and as objects rather than subjects of adult socialization, the course features children as active agents who contribute to and are shaped by social institutions. The course seeks to deepen your understanding of the tensions between the dominant and non-dominant early childhood education discourses, and how educational goals and pedagogical issues are influenced by cultural beliefs that underlie them.
