Background
- The National Equity Project has given us permission to “remix” their Liberatory Design Mindsets resource with their Creative Commons license.
Task
- Imagine you were supporting your teacher candidates to embody some of the Liberatory Design mindsets or CITE Community Agreements as they set about designing activities for their learners. How might you remix the directions of this activity?
To complete this task:
- Either download the PowerPoint slides attached to this forum post OR make a copy of this Google Slides presentation.
- Remix the activity on Slide 3. You can add more slides if you need.
To Share:
- Attach your PowerPoint, or link your Google slides to your discussion forum post when you’re done. If you go the Google Slides route, make sure permissions allow anyone to view your work.
- Add a brief reflection on your process and what you hoped you accomplished with the activity.

MemberHi Team, Here is my slideshow.
I decided to add to pre-activities to launch the conversation prior to exploring the Liberatory Mindsets. I think that I would also have my students define – learning, thriving, and liberating as outcomes of learning experiences along with core feelings, joy, love, challenge, and freedom.

MemberHey folks,
I added a third option – because I like choice.
Option 3 has a balance of individual work and collective discussion and agreement. I also think this new option honors that the dynamics of each group are different and group strength and growth will require different supports.
Here is my slidedeck.
Best,
Virginia

ParticipantI like the activity as it is presented and would want to try if first before making too many changes.
I decided to have students review the mindsets and then create 3 of their own for a group project.

MemberMy remixed activity starts with the mindset deck and builds to connecting mindsets (internal beliefs) with actions (external expression). The teacher candidates then consider how this would transfer to the mindsets and actions of their early childhood learners. The conversation would be scaffolded to support understanding of behavior as communication and the importance of not only experiencing the equity mindsets, but also communicating our equity intentions through actions (for learners of every age).
June 1, 2023 at 7:28 am #140058Part of being a great team member is knowing who you are and what you need so you can state your expectations clearly and then work to build a collective. I added this step of self-reflection into the practice.

MemberHello!
I tried to come up with a way to incorporate group discussion and reflection with individual intention setting. My option 3 asks participants to ultimately choose 1 mindset that is either most important to them or most central to their work with students or even potentially one they feel they need to commit to most. After everyone narrows down to 1, we can compile a list to notice trends and reflect. Do some mindsets repeat? Have others been discarded entirely by everyone in the group? What are the implications for our work with one another and with students?
Here you go:

I loved doing this/planning for this work–and can see myself using this in the Fall 2023 semester to be sure!

June 2, 2023 at 1:53 pm #140141Here is my slide, I decided to use this activity as an ice-breaker with multilingual students in mind. Students will use all 4 modalities (listening, speaking, reading and writing) to interact with each other and find out about each other’s mindsets.
June 2, 2023 at 10:59 pm #140169howdy, folks! Here’s my ricka-ricka-rickaREMIX.
I decided to go with a backwards-design inspired approach as I think this can really help teachers (including myself) think about the tangible next steps so that it doesn’t feel as though we are just throwing buzz-words into the air without accountability.
Paying Lip Service serves no one.

June 5, 2023 at 2:04 pm #140238Hello team,
Here is my Remix activity. I responded to the activity and remixed it up a bit in the last slide. I had the idea of facilitating this activity with students to learn more about what they think should be included/prioritized as values or mindsets in our work.
