Computing Integrated Teacher Education (CITE) @ CUNY

Computing Integrated Teacher Education is a four-year initiative to support CUNY faculty at all ranks to integrate state standards aligned computing content and pedagogy into required education courses, field work and student teaching. Supported by public funding from the New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) Computer Science for All (CS4All) program and private funding from the Robin Hood Learning + Technology Fund, the initiative will focus on building on and complementing the success of NYCDOE CS4All and pilots to integrate computational thinking at Queens College, Hunter College and Hostos Community College.

The initiative focuses on:
– Supporting institutional change in teacher education programs
– Building faculty computing pedagogical content knowledge through the lens of culturally response-sustaining education
– Supporting faculty research in equitable computing education, inclusive STEM pedagogies, and effects on their students’ instructional practices

    When you share how to videos (youtube etc.) that demo how to use programs, it would be great to have resources for macs as well as pcs. I’m trying to follow along on the youtube for pivot tables, but it seems like the menus are a little different than what I see on my mac. I’m going to try to spelunk on my own to find some other resources, but if you have a chance to share stuff for macs that would be super helpful. Thanks! Kirsten

    I found that Flipgrid on my laptop seems to create a strange echo chamber situation (my Module 0 intro video), while the desktop at work seems to work fine without the strange echo. Does anyone know what might be going on with trying to use Flipgrid on my laptop? I can’t seem to figure it out…

    Anything different between laptop and desktop – i.e. using headphones? different browsers? Different operating systems?

    It gives me such joy when folks start finding their own resources to learn computing practices. There are so many reasons why one tutorial, video, blog post, etc. might work for one person and not another – the pacing, the organization, the problem the person is trying to solve, the mental model of the tech, the background with the tech, the assumptions about tech and computing practices, etc

    My laptop is a Mac and the desktop at work is a Dell… so apparently Flipgrid and Dell get along better?

    This isn’t a question, but rather a comment about Module 8 Critically Conscious Computing (there was no discussion board and I wasn’t sure if it would confuse people if I posted my comments on the Padlet).

    I loved these resources. I downloaded articles and handouts, tinkered with the MadLibs activity on the Civics of Technology website, saved all of the Joy Boulamwini videos and shared them with my family, and downloaded the snapshots of the educational technologies from the Human Rights Watch website. I found the work that is being done with HS students on AI technology (learning to code/learning to critically analyze) wonderful.

    The only resource that I found a bit superficial was the article on the TikTok hearings. I thought the author unfairly dismissed the NYT article, which actually explored the privacy issues in more depth, while the link from that article to the EPIC website provided much more important analysis. The author makes a statement that young people who use TikTok and other free apps both expect and accept that their data will be used and they willingly trade their privacy for the convenience of using the apps. The author doesn’t provide any context for that argument, other than saying it is “learned helplessness,” or provide an alternative view on young people who are critically analyzing and actively advocating.

    Anyway, I just wanted to share my thoughts on this wonderful compilation of resources on critically conscious computing.

    I am looking at Module 7. I find the instructions for the “Teacher Moments” confusing. I created an account, then clicked “Read the Teacher Moment Scenario” link under Apply. I get a page that says “this scenario is currently in progress”. Clicking “Continue this Scenario” I get a scenario about students questioning my artifact. Which is fine, but I also see there are a lot of other scenarios available. Are we to do just that one, or choose others? Thanks.
