ITP Skills Lab: Hip-Hop Word Count

Join us for a hands-on demo of Hip-Hop Word Count and its applications with project creator, Tahir Hemphill. Hip-Hop Word Count is a database of thousands of rap songs that can be searched using a range of metrics (including date, artist, word, word complexity, and locality) to allow for in-depth analysis of the lyrics. Learn how this tool can be used to facilitate close reading, data visualization, and an exciting range of creative technology projects that explore rap as a cultural indicator. Participants should come prepared to discuss the project Actual Fact: Visualizing Hiphop as a Cultural Indicator (www.actualfact.net), an application of Hip-Hop Word Count.

Lab will be held in C196.01, located in the basement of the GC library.

Registration required. For more information, please contact Julie Fuller, APO, Interactive Technology and Pedagogy Certificate, jfuller1@gradcenter.cuny.edu.
