Omar Gervacio Gina Ryder 12/18/18 ENGL 21001 Final Reflective Essay   My experience in English 21001 during the first semester was very unique when compared to most other classes. Before entering the class, I was expecting to have a traditional class since that is the standard procedure. Not only that, but because it was my first semester at college, I was not used to the environment as my classmates were. Because most of my classmates in English 21001 were sophomores, I believe they didn't receive as much of an impact as I have. My experience during my first semester of college was frightening because I did not know what to expect. In high school, English class was not very difficult because our readings were not as long as in college. Tied in with the fact that high School teachers aren't as strict as college professors, further proves the differences in difficulty. My approach with with school work has changed in the past few months due to school. My approach changed at the beginning when I got received homework on the first day of class from my other classes, which was a wake up call to me. I've never received homework on the first day of class before in my life. Two years ago, I was part of a program called “CollegeNow” which allowed high school students to take college courses and receive credits for it. In 11th grade I took an English class and Computer Science class at Lehman College, I received a total of 7 credits which are on my transcript. My experience during college now were meant to prepare me for college and to provide me with some credits to save money while in college. However, these classes, in my opinion were easier than a traditional college course and did not completely prepare me for the college experience. I never had English 101, but in my English course at Lehman, my writing was very basic and I never proofread my work. This was prevalent in my high school classes as well, but the difference is that English teachers would always overlook grammar errors. The difference between my older work and modern work, is that I take more time into analyzing my choice of words and that I proofread more than I did in the past. The events that influenced me to modify my writing, was receiving feedback in City College from tutors and professors. I learned about the cultural differences in New York City from in class videos. Especially the video about how different Latino’s can look from each other. In my opinion, New York City has been a more anti social city in the past decade. On the trains, people used to talk to each other and open up discussions. In today's society, New Yorkers are on their phones texting and taking photos.
