British Empire: Sunrise to Sunset

Internal colonialism is the root to the British empire’s path to colonising several other countries. England was very much using their power to force their rule over the three surrounding countries Wales, Scotland and Ireland. They also used discriminatory actions against the countries to force inequality.

Religion had been the main reason why Britain had wanted to colonize the surrounding three countries. England wanted to break away from catholicism and by forcing the countries they just colonized to become protestants instead of their religion is what ultimately would secure that the crown would change to a ptestant one.

England used it’s economy to cover for governmental expenses, proving to be the model for life in the Americas not too far after. They had exploited the countries that they controlled under colonialism just to reap the economic benefit for themselves. These exploitations consisted of not allowing the controlled countries to trade with anyone else but England.

“Gavelkind”, the division of land shared amongst all sons practiced by colonized Scotland, during the uprising of the British empire had been a hindrance to them because they did not benefit from this. They wanted to use those large plots of land in order to maximize their gains from crops instead of allowing entire families to benefit from them. This practice of gavelkind was deemed by Britain as barbaric and uncivil, which is usually the way it goes for the culture of the country that is being colonized.

Colonialism affects the countries that it controls because it throws them in between their mother countries issues with other surrounding countries. This was the case for England, who had used colonialism as a way to secure their borders from invasion. These countries then get stuck in between two colonial powers that have no one’s interest in mind, but themselves.
