  • Mary Simkhovitch was the head of Greenwich House from 1901 to 1951.
  • She was involved with the Committee on Congestion of Population, which dealt with ways to reduce “congestion” (overcrowding) in the cities, as well as the causes. Some people there wanted to completely abandon cities, and others wanted to improve them.
  • Benjamin Marsh was a resident at Greenwich House, went to Europe to research city planning and zoning, favored a “single tax” on land to earn revenue, and was also involved with the Congestion Committee, and was a fan of “aesthetics” to improve the city’s lifestyle and property values.
