Join our team: Apply to be a GC Digital Fellow in 2020-2021

Applications due Friday, April 17, 2020

The GC Digital Fellows Program welcomes applications from doctoral students to join our collaborative, interdisciplinary team and share their mission to promote the critical and creative integration of digital methods into research, teaching, and service across The Graduate Center, CUNY.

As part of GC Digital Initiatives, GC Digital Fellows work collaboratively to expand communities of learning, practice, and support around emerging forms of digital scholarship. Invested in how questions of race, gender, and social justice intersect with the production and use of technology, fellows operate as an in-house “think-and-do” tank while supporting digital projects that reflect the intellectual values of the GC’s students, faculty, and staff.

Fellows lead week-long digital research institutes, teach workshops on technical skills, create resources for GC students and faculty, and build digital projects that make use of the affordances of emerging technology while considering the ethical, social, and political stakes.

Recent GC Digital Fellows projects include:

What qualities do we look for in a GC Digital Fellow?

  • An awareness of interdisciplinary research practices, values, and concerns;
  • The ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to new audiences;
  • Demonstrated experience working with technology in a scholarly capacity;
  • A curiosity that leads to learning new technologies and sharing what you learn;
  • A critical-eye for the potential ethical and social challenges technology presents;
  • An interest in open-source and free software that reflects the values of CUNY.

Doctoral students who are within the first five years of admission to their program are eligible to apply, and we encourage applications from women, BIPOC, and underrepresented groups in higher education and technology. We hope to add strength to our program in WordPress, PHP, machine learning, text analysis, GIS, and mapping; however, we encourage those with a broad range of skills and interests in addition to these to apply, as well.

To get a better sense of our work, you can read the GC Digital Fellows’ blog, Tagging the Tower, and review our GC Digital Fellow program description.

The initial DF appointment is for one year (exact dates vary and will be specified upon appointment). Determinations of DF re-appointments will be made on annual basis up to three years, depending on individual eligibility and GC needs.
