Please join ACRLNY’s Open Discussion Group for a discussion of Open Pedagogy and Academic Libraries at our meeting on Friday February 21, 3-4pm,  at the Manhattan Campus of Mercy College.

We welcome Jean Amaral, Associate Professor and Open Knowledge Librarian at BMCC, who will kick-off our gathering, and offers the following discussion prompt:

“Open pedagogy is a process or journey moving our classrooms from teacher-centered to student-centered to learner-driven (co-creating the classroom as learning community), from students as knowledge consumers to students as knowledge creators (disposable assignments vs authentic/renewable assignments), from closed teaching and learning environments (classroom, BlackBoard, commercial materials) to open or public spaces (open classrooms, on the web, open materials), from a focus on what we’re doing (obscured choices) to why we’re doing it (transparent/open, participatory choices). Creating learning experiences at the intersection of open pedagogy, culturally sustaining pedagogies (CSP), and universal design for learning (UDL) can be transformative for both students and faculty. In this space, what possibilities open for librarians? For librarians working with faculty? With students?”

After Jean’s brief presentation and group discussion, we will also have the opportunity to share ideas for Open Education Week activities and events, if attendees wish.

This event is free for ACRLNY members; If you are not a member, consider joining…a New York Bargain! https://acrlny.org/join-us/become-a-member-of-acrlny/

Please register by Wednesday 2/19, and bring photo ID to show at Security desk.
