The Graduate Assistant – Instructional Technologist at Barnard’s Digital Humanities Center, will assist Digital Humanities Center staff by providing course instruction. In collaboration with the Barnard IMATS Web & UX Technologist, as well as stafff from the Digital Humanities Center, Library and Archives, they will prepare and deliver several workshops throughout the Spring 2020 semester. This lab instruction will support a faculty member in the French department with a course exploring the cultural production emanating from the court of Louis XIV at Versailles. Students in the course will work in groups to produce StoryMap JS using a JSON workflow to produce multi-dimensional walkthroughs of current day Versailles with archival materials, images, and other elements. Will be asked to work with other courses occasionally as needed. Should be able to guide students through the use of entry-level DH platforms, including StoryMaps JS, Timeline JS, and Scalar. Should have general proficiency with introductory tools for data visualization, as well as spatial analysis and text analysis. Knowledge of HTML/CSS, Javascript and JSON is desired.
The primary duties of the GA will be (1) to teach or co-teach workshop sessions on Wednesdays 4pm – 5pm, (2) to contribute to class prep meetings in January and throughout the semester with co-instructors; (3) to assist collaborators in troubleshooting and maintaining student projects during the semester; (4) to hold open hours along with DHC staff to provide walk-in support and consultations for a variety of student projects.
The time commitment is between 8 and 10 hours per week, and will vary based on the changing demand for student support throughout the semester. For every one hour of teaching there is typically 3-4 hours of preparation time.
