    Hello Everyone!
The LACUNY Emerging Technologies Committee hopes you can join us for our November fall workshop on Text Analysis!

    Text Analysis Workshop
    November 16, 2016
    10am-12:30pm

    Lloyd Sealy Library (Classroom)
John Jay College of Criminal Justice
    524 W 59th St, New York, NY 10019

Workshop leader: Robin Davis, Emerging Technologies & Online Learning Librarian at John Jay

Join us for an introductory workshop focused on text analysis, a fundamental skill in digital humanities work. In this workshop, you’ll learn how treating a novel as a “bag of words” can yield interesting results. We’ll tour several text analysis projects that use the bag of words approach. You will experiment with Voyant Tools, topic modeling software, and even begin to tweak ready-made Python code to look for patterns in the public domain book of your choice.

You don’t need any experience with code, programming, or the digital humanities to attend this workshop. We will meet in a computer lab, but you can bring your laptop if you wish.

Examples of questions you’ll be able to answer after this workshop:
    • How can I see every noun that follows the word “good” in all Shakespeare plays?
    • How can I automatically make a list of every character name in a given book?
    • Do Gothic writers tend to write longer sentences than science fiction writers?

If there are any questions, feel free to contact co-chairs Mark Eaton or Leslie Ward.

    Thanks for attending, everybody!

I put the code & data we used on GitHub: https://github.com/robincamille/textanalysisworkshop You’ll be happy to know that I updated the State of the Union addresses to have their years for titles, so that when you upload them to Voyant Tools, they’ll be arranged chronologically.

I did NOT include the positive/negative word lists that we used, since they aren’t mine and shouldn’t be publicly redistributed, but just email me and I’ll be happy to send them to you.

    Slides are viewable online.
