    Hello again hive-mind,
I am writing to see if anyone could direct me toward a good resource for transcription services. I will be doing a series of audio and video interviews and am hoping to hire some transcription help. I am sure there must be a way to do this at CUNY, but I have yet to find the answer. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thank you!

    Hi Amanda,
For a personal project, I used Linked In’s Transcribers Group http://www.linkedin.com/groups/Transcribers-Group-3722366?home=&gid=3722366&trk=anet_ug_hm
which seems like an unverifiable outsourcing system, but after posting for a particular demographic, I received a surprising number of qualified applicants and had a rigorous application and interview process.
I’m not sure what is available within a CUNY, however. Often, you can send the call out to a departmental listserv, and let the people know your budget.

That’s helpful, Shawnta, thanks. Can you give us a rough idea of what people in the group charge per hour or page of transcription?

There’s also Rev (http://www.rev.com/) which is an online service that does transcription for $1 per minute, 48 hour turnaround. We’ve had good experience with them, used them for JustPublics@365 transcribing of podcasts (for blog posts).

    Thanks Jessie.
For the Linked In Group, you’d have to put out a call and ask for folks to bid. It’s good to see what competitive rates are as in Jessie’s referred service. Most charge per audio minute. Another referral (just remembered) is when I worked at StoryCorps and in the slim cases when transcriptions were ordered, they used Audio Transcription Service.
