    Hello admins,

The CUNY Academic Commons Team is proud to announce a number of improvements to the group interface to help members connect and create more efficiently and effectively. When you have a chance, please take some time to review these updates so you can better inform your group members about these exciting new changes.

    BuddyDocs (new)
Our first and most significant update is the addition of BuddyPress Docs. Developed by the Commons’ own Boone Gorges ( @boonebgorges), ‘Docs’ allows groups to collaboratively write and edit documents. In order to avoid confusion with Docs, we’ve changed the old ‘Documents’ tab to ‘Files’. All the files you’ve uploaded to your group in the past can be found on the new Files tab at the left.

Doc authors, as well as group admins and mods, can control the visibility, editing, and commenting of a given doc. With full taxonomy support, BuddyPress Docs lets group members tag and organize their content however they’d like. Doc lists can be filtered by tag, author, title, date created, or date last updated. More information about BuddyDocs will be provided on the Commons Codex Blog in the days to come, but in the meantime please check out the Commons News Blog for more details about this powerful and flexible new tool.

    * Please note that the Docs feature must be “enabled” by a group admin in order to work, much in the same way a WordPress plugin must be activated.

    Group Blog
Our next update is an overall improved Group Blog performance. Group administrators can now easily adjust the group blog’s privacy settings by navigating to the Group Blog tab in the Admin tools. In addition to bug fixes that have allowed for a more seamless syncing of new group members with a blog, a new section on the blog’s Dashboard called “BuddyPress Group Blog” will provide a link to the group that the blog is currently associated with. Admins can also unlink a group blog, allowing the blog to be associated with another group.

    Group Forums
With the addition of a ‘reply’ button to the top of group forums members can easily post a reply without having to scroll to the bottom of a forum thread.

    Group Members
The ‘members’ section of a group now lists each member’s school affiliation, title, and interests. Members will also see the enhanced member directories on the ‘People‘ tab of the site. This is not a major change, but one that enables colleagues to connect on a few different levels without having to navigate directly to a member’s profile page.

For a full list of updates associated with the 1.2.0 release, please take a look at the Commons Dev Blog or view the milestone here: http://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/versions/show/8.

If you have questions about any of these features or would like to provide some feedback on the new group experience, please do not hesitate to post a reply.

    Best,
