November 12th is shaping up to be a nexus of exciting comp/rhet events: in addition to Jessica Yood’s job talk at the Grad Center at 4pm, the CCRC’s own Mina Shaughnessy Lecture Series will host its inaugural event at Hunter College, starting at 6pm. The Mina Shaughnessy Lecture Series will sponsor Deborah Brandt (Univ. of Wisconsin–Madison) and Lynn Troyka (CUNY–City College), presenting Writing-Reading Connections: Two Talks in Celebration of the Memory of Marilyn Sternglass. These two extraordinary leaders in the study of literacy will discuss the scholarship of Marilyn Sternglass (author of Time to Know Them) and its continued influence upon contemporary literacy research.

This event, sponsored by the CUNY Composition & Rhetoric Community and the Hunter College Dean of Undergraduates, launches an ongoing series of lectures/discussions between both people inside and outside of the City University of New York. The Mina Shaughnessy Lecture Series proposes to reclaim CUNY’s historical contribution to the field of composition and rhetoric while simultaneously connecting the impact of its educational heritage with broader practices and discussions across the nation.

Deborah Brandt, Professor of English at University of Madison, Wisconsin, is the winner of numerous awards for research and teaching, including the MLA’s Mina P. Shaughnessy Book Prize for Literacy in American Lives (Cambridge Univ. Press, 2001); she is the author, most recently, of Literacy and Learning: Reflections on Reading, Writing, and Society (Jossey-Bass, 2009).
Lynn Quitman Troyka, Professor of Writing in the Graduate Program for Language and Literacy at City College, CUNY, is the winner of numerous awards for research, teaching, and service, including the Exemplar Award in 2001 from the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC); she is also a past chair of the CCCC, the Two-Year College Association (TYCA) of the National Council of Teachers (NCTE), the College Section of NCTE, and the Writing Division of the MLA.
