Art for a New Future (June 24-26, 2021) is a nationwide virtual convening hosted by Justice Arts Coalition. Join their growing network of artists impacted by criminal legal systems, teaching artists, arts advocates, and allies for interactive and embodied art experiences, and conversation. Participants will have the ability to learn, create, and connect, harnessing the liberatory power of the arts to reimagine justice. Each day will offer panel discussions, participatory workshops, skill-sharing sessions, performances, collective art-making spaces, and more.

The Convening will run from 11:30am to 4:30pm EST each day, including a daily plenary and a diverse selection of workshops, panel discussions, and presentations throughout. There will also be a performance or screening each evening at 8:00pm EST.

Plenary 1: In Conversation with Nicole Fleetwood, Ndume Olatushani, Rachel Nelson, moderated by Sabra Williams.

Plenary 2: “Abolition is About Making Things” moderated by Mariame Kaba. Featuring Rachel Wallis, Monica Trinidad, Naima Thomas, Bianca Diaz, and Neta Bomani.

Plenary 3: “Poverty Scholarship: Poor People-Led Theory, Art, Words, and Tears Across Mama Earth” with Lisa “Tiny” Gray-Garcia and POOR Magazine/Prensa POBRE.

Additional sessions include, among many others:

    • Anti-Colonial Abolition and Creative Expression: Worlding the Abolitionist Now
    • Get Lit: Igniting Young Spirits Through Inner Gardening, Afrofuturism, and Technology
    • Undanced Dances Through Prison Walls During a Pandemic
    • Art, Literature, and Organization in an Argentine Prison

Justice Arts Coalition seeks to eliminate all barriers, financial and otherwise, to attendance. Payment tiers are structured on an equity scale to accommodate varied financial abilities. Ticket price includes access to all sessions over all three days and is self-determined. We can only offer a limited number of free tickets; the free tickets allow our community members with limited means to attend. Consider your proximity to power, privilege, and resources when selecting a ticket tier so that we can move towards equity. Funds raised through registrations will cover convening expenses, including honorariums for our presenters, and net proceeds will support increased honorariums for system-impacted presenters.

    Register for the convening here!
