International Research Experiences are increasingly seen as important
components of High Impact undergraduate activities.
Bianca’s talk will focus on her research and personal experiences from an undergraduate at York College to graduate school at Brown University. She will discuss how her undergraduate research experience at York and during LSAMP shaped her interests and career choice. She will also speak about the transition from undergraduate to graduate research and expand on her current research project. During this section of the talk, she will detail her graduate school experiences, including a series of failures, successes, and growth. She will end the talk with an overview of where she is currently in her program– preparing to defend and applying for postdoc grants.
Bianca Brown is a Ph.D. candidate in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Brown University, where she studies the microbiome dynamics of small mammals in a tractable yet perturbed system in Kenya. Her goal is to use microbial changes to understand species’ diet and health in anthropogenic challenged environments. She has characterized the microbiome of a plethora of species, and the synthesis of her work is expected to inform how microbiome changes may play a role in conserving species. Before joining Brown, Bianca attended CUNY York College (class 2014), where she did her undergraduate thesis in collaboration with the Museum of National History (AMNH) in New York. During undergrad, she studied phylogenetics and speciation of fishes in the Lower Congo River. In addition to thesis projects, Bianca was part of the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) and participated in study abroad programs during her tenure with the program.

Consortia members include the Grove School of Engineering, Wells College, John Jay College, and Norfolk State University.
