• Hi Mari –
I wasn’t able to see your screenshots, but I wonder if your “Screen Options” are set in a manner that is not displaying what you need. I have attached a screenshot of what I am talking about. Click on “Screen Options” and check the appropriate boxes to see them in the dialog below. That may be the reason why your screen doesn’t look like the video.

  • Hi Mari –
Sorry you are having such difficulties. I found a 4 minute YouTube video that should help you with Menus – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TkXaoMIzQ4
You shouldn’t need to worry about making hyperlinks of the menu items – it is done automatically. I think the problem might be that you are not adding items to the menu structure? – this is shown in the middle of the video. And if you want to go back to where you were before – not using the built-in menu, you can go to the tab called “Manage Locations” and there simply remove the menu name that you created from the drop down.
    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Mari –
If your professor is going to talk about Menus tomorrow, maybe you should hold off until then to make your changes. You will not destroy everything you’ve done so far, but it might not seem evident how to return to where you are now. But ultimately, you’ll want to use WP’s built-in menus to control your navigation.

Also, you might want to create another site (a “sandbox”) – just for testing and playing around. Then you won’t need to worry about messing up your course site. It’s a great way to learn WordPress – stress free.

Twenty Fourteen can be a little tricky at first. Here is a link to a post on the Codex that will help you get started – http://codex.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2014/02/21/getting-started-twenty-fourteen/

Check out the “Static Front Page” setting. Here you tell WordPress whether you want to display your posts (you might not have any posts, hence “Nothing Found”), or if you want to display a custom, static page as your Home page. It sounds like you might want to use your “Introduction” page here.

Hope this helps and let us know of more questions.

  • Hi Mari – It could be a number of issues and it is hard to tell without knowing what theme you are using – is it possible to share a link or provide a screenshot or let us know the theme name?

If you want to show links in your sidebar, you will probably need to make sure your home page is set up to display a sidebar – this is usually controlled by a template. Once you are sure that you’re home page has the sidebar area, go to Appearance>>Widgets and drag over some widgets into the Sidebar area – a widgets such as “Menu” or “Recent Posts” or “Recent Pages” or “Archives” will probably get you started.

Also, WordPress has a built in Menu generator. Go to Appearance>>Menus and build your custom menu(s). Most themes let you have at least 2 menus – a primary menu and a top menu. You might want to start with the primary menu – you can drag the pages, posts, and other content into the “Menu Structure,” save the menu by providing a name, and select the “primary” checkbox. That menu should appear in the main navigation section of your theme.

You may need to go to the “Manage Locations” tab and make sure the primary menu has the name in the dropdown that you provided, although I think it should do it automatically. This is for when you have built more than one menu.

I hope this helps and let us know if you have any questions.

    Hi –
The responsive Meta Slider plugin is now available on the Commons, and is great option if you are using a theme without slider functionality, or if just you want a different look and effect for a page or post. It provides four different types of sliders, and functionality to layer your slider images with rich text. Here is a link to a Codex post to get you started – http://codex.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2014/11/02/meta-slider/. This post also compares Meta Slider to the three other standalone slider plugins we have on the Commons. Enjoy!
