    Cynthia Tobar is a cross-disciplinary metadata specialist/archivist experienced in digital project planning and implementation, including the development of metadata best practices, controlled vocabularies and taxonomies aimed at improving and maximizing information retrieval for digital content. Cynthia is adept at bringing together specialists in humanities, digital technologies, library science, and archival science to engage as a team in the planning and designing of open source, publicly accessible digital humanities teaching and learning tool prototypes.

    Cynthia is the Library Archivist at the Center for Puerto Rican Studies (Centro) at Hunter College, where she is managing the 100 Puerto Ricans Oral History Project, which aims to collect the memories of those whose legacy have made an impact to the stateside Puerto Rican community. She is also working to preserve Centro’s existing oral history collections and make this content available to researchers with the creation of digital humanities initiatives and collaborations. Prior to Centro, Cynthia has shared her extensive knowledge as an archivist, librarian, educator and oral historian at esteemed cultural heritage and higher education institutions such as the City University of New York, the New York Public Library, the Museum of the City of New York, the Brooklyn Historical Society, the Vera Institute of Justice and Pratt Institute.

    Cynthia is the founder of the WRI Oral History Project, which is documenting the Welfare Rights Initiative (WRI), a grassroots student activist and community leadership training organization located at Hunter College. She has also collaborated with the Occupy Wall Street Archives Working Group, where she conducted life history interviews with OWS occupiers. Cynthia received her Master’s degree in Political Science from New School University and her Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, with a certificate in Archival Management, from Pratt Institute.

    Digital Archives
    Metadata standards’ evolving role in the Semantic Web environment
    Community-Based Oral History
    Documenting Social Movements and Student Activism.

    Job description: The person filling this full-time position will be responsible for the marketing and sales of the Museum’s online and blended teacher education programs with the specific measurable objective of increasing enrollments and revenues according to predefined multiyear targets. The work, which will be situated within the AMNH Education Department’s National Center for Science Literacy, Education and Technology, will center on both increasing net revenues for the Seminars on Science online professional development program as well as on creating new and enhanced course licensing efforts. Achieving project goals will require the development of new and enhanced marketing and dissemination efforts for Seminars on Science, including the licensing of its course assets. The position will also require the conception and management of marketing campaigns, with a particular emphasis on the program’s marketing website as well as social media. The position will require close collaboration with the Director of Online Teacher Education Programs (to whom this position reports) and the Senior Manager of Online Teacher Education Programs. Support for the collection, aggregation and analysis of relevant data will be provided in part by the Project Coordinator. Additionally, this person will be responsible for the creation of regular email campaigns and work with the AMNH Communications Department, as needed, to coordinate social media campaigns.

    Qualifications include: Knowledge, skills and experience in strategic planning, partnership development and marketing are required. Knowledge of online education business models, disruptive innovation and higher education as well as familiarity with K-12 teacher professional development will be helpful. A bachelor’s degree is required. Successful candidates are expected to have (or to receive in 2014) an MBA or equivalent degree. (In exceptional cases, work experience consisting of at least 3 years of work in continuing education and/or online education may be substituted for a graduate degree in business. In such cases, candidates are expected to show a strong track record of success in partnership development, business development and/or marketing.) Prior business experience is strongly preferred. Candidates are expected to have an understanding of the global marketplace for education as well as broad-gauge skills in partnership and business development, including negotiation, pricing, business metrics and relationship management. Experience in continuing education helpful. Superb speaking, writing and analytical skills are required.
