    Dear IRRT members,

Hope everyone had a good summer. I wanted to call your attention to a program that the roundtable will be hosting in late September called “Mapping Library Contributions of Campus Internationalization,” with guest speakers from several other universities. I just sent an announcement out on CULIBS but am also copying the info below. Hope to see you there!

    Friday, September 26, 2014
    2:30pm to 4pm
    Room C201
    CUNY Graduate Center
365 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10016

Presenters: Steve Witt (University of Illinois), Laurie Kutner (University of Vermont), and Elizabeth Cooper (University of Colorado, Denver).

The presenters surveyed U.S. academic libraries to establish baseline data on their contributions to campus internationalization activities. Additionally, follow-up interviews were conducted with library deans and directors to elucidate a deeper picture of the intersection of the academic library and campus internationalization. The presenters will both summarize the results of their research and facilitate discussion on how the results reflect (or not) the specific institutional experiences of CUNY librarians. Additionally, the presenters will facilitate discussion on how libraries can move forward with internationalization, including developing best practices and assessing the academic library’s support for campus internationalization efforts.

  • Those who attended the IRRT event last spring on small libraries in Africa may recall that one of the members of the panel, Hunter professor Kate Parry, works with the Kitengesa Community Library in Uganda. On Wednesday, April 23rd, Dr. Parry and others will be holding a benefit event, including a poetry reading, for Kitengesa at the Hunter campus. Please see the attached .jpg invitation for more details. Thank you!

We now have one more speaker confirmed for March–Megan Meberg from Better World Books, one of the other groups we were considering at our last meeting. She sounds very enthusiastic about it. We’re also waiting to hear more from Libraries without Borders–if they confirm, that will give us three speakers for the day.

I also wanted to ask whether the date of March 22 will be an issue for anyone. It’s been pointed out that 3/22 is also the date of the Columbia U. Libraries Symposium this year. Probably no date is going to be entirely free of conflict, but if anyone feels that we should avoid the 22nd, now would be the time to have that conversation, since we’ll need to reserve a space, etc. soon. Thanks.

    Hi all,

Just to update those who couldn’t attend the meeting last week, thanks to Ewa we do now have one speaker confirmed for a March event–Eva Kaplan of the Marias Libraries/Kenyan libraries project. The date we’re trying for is Friday, March 22, probably at the Graduate Center. In the meantime, we’ll try to confirm one or two other presenters for the event–this may be from the UN literacy programs, or Libraries without Borders which is also heavily involved in Africa, or Sophie Essmat, an Iranian librarian and activist who will be visiting the US at some point this spring. If the timing doesn’t work out for Ms. Essmat to speak at the March program, there may be some other meeting or event arranged around her visit, to be determined.

    Thanks,
    John
