Notes from 9 October 2015 meeting of the Library Technology Subcommittee

    Location

    Hostos Community College library

    Attendees

    Mark Eaton (Kingsborough)
    Stephen Francoeur (Baruch)
    Benjamin Franz (Medgar Evers)
    Stefanie Havelka (Lehman)
    Joan Kolarik (CUNY OLS)
    Miriam Laskin (Hostos)
    Kate Lyons (Hostos)
    Alex Berrio Matamoros (CUNY Law)
    Bonnie Nelson (John Jay)
    Leslie Ward (Queensborough)
    Gordon Xu (City Tech)

    Leadership in the Subcommittee

We agreed that we should have co-chairs to co-ordinate the work of our subcommittee. One of those co-chairs should already be a member of the CUNY Committee on Academic Technology (CUNY CAT) and would be responsible for reporting to CUNY CAT on the work of our group. The other co-chair could be any other member of the subcommittee. Anyone who is interested in serving as a co-chair should come to our next meeting in early December so we can decide on a process for choosing co-chairs.

    Guest Printing

After reviewing the notes from the survey, which was completed over the summer, it was agreed that Stephen Francoeur would write up a summary paragraph to go with the notes and run that by the subcommittee for approval. Once we’ve agreed that the report is ready, copies of it will be sent to CULIBS, the Council of Chief Librarians, and to the CUNY Committee on Academic Technology.

One interesting point that come out of the discussion is that the numbers of guests at some campuses is quite low as compared to other campuses. At those schools with lower than average traffic from guests, it’s not uncommon for reference desk staff to do small print jobs for free for visitors.

    Federated Identity Management

Over the summer, the CUNY Office of Library Services shared a survey on identity management with members of the Systems Committee and the Public Services Committee. Results of that survey are being analyzed and will be distributed later.

It was mentioned that Lehman College is offering a password management system to students and faculty.

Areas of Shared Interest with Other Subcommittees from the CUNY CAT

We would like to reach out to the other CUNY CAT subcommittees to see if they might want to work on some projects together or have a joint meeting. We reviewed some points of shared interest.

Regarding the Blackboard Subcommittee, BbCAT, we talked about efforts across CUNY libraries to integrate their resources and services more deeply and meaningfully within Blackboard. A Library/Blackboard Working Group has been at work for the past year looking at the problem and sharing solutions (see http://guides.cuny.edu/c.php?g=221754 for more info). Mark Eaton and Helen Georgas are working on a report to the Council of Chief Librarians about the work done so far. A key contact is Nora Almeida (NYCCT), who is chair of the Library/Blackboard Working Group.

Regarding the CUNY Academic Commons Subcommittee, it was noted that the Matt Gold, the chair of that group, has expressed interest in talking to our group about identity management. There is also work going on by this subcommittee to explore the feasibility of Fedora and Hydra as a platform for a future version of CUNY’s institutional repository, Academic Works.

Regarding the Digital Scholarship Subcommittee, we talked about how the library faculty are well suited to talk about the evolving system of scholarly communication and the management of the scholarly record. We are also interested in issues relating to the presentation, assessment, and archiving of digital works of scholarship.

News and Issues from Around CUNY Libraries

A new UI for Primo will be beta tested next year. The final dates for that test are still being worked out.

Guide on the Side software is available from CUNY OLS. Developed by the libraries at the Univesity of Arizona, this software can be used to make database tutorials that run alongside a live databsase interface (details can be found at http://code.library.arizona.edu/).

CUNY-wide budget cuts have affected campus libraries and forced some of us to scale back database subscriptions. It was also noted that the textbook funds will become a thing of the past.

    Next Meeting

We’ll meet in early December at Lehman College. A Doodle poll will go out soon to determine the best date.
