“The New York Public Library and The Moth are excited to announce Open
Audio Weekend, a two-day hackathon to make audio accessible for the public
good.
Libraries and public media are putting a wealth of recorded audio online,
in the form of oral histories, podcasts, and radio news. But without
full-text transcripts or deeper descriptions, much of this content is
beyond the reach of search engines, and inaccessible to the deaf or hard of
hearing. Building on NYPL’s & The Moth’s Together We Listen collaboration,
we are hosting a two day hackathon designed to advance the cause of audio
accessibility, and to explore future uses of media archives online. Avenues
of investigation might include:
Developing new ways of discovering, browsing, and listening to audio (e.g.
browsing by location)
Analyzing, visualizing, or performing entity extraction on audio and
transcripts
Creating new models for listening to and sharing audio and transcripts
(e.g. creating walking tours)
… and other investigations crafted by participants like you!
Participants will have access to a wealth of audio, transcriptions, and
annotations from event organizers & partners, including The New York Public
Library, The Moth, Pop Upr Archive, Fresh Air, PRI’s The World in Words,
and more!
If this sounds interesting, we encourage you to apply for Open Audio
Weekend and help us spread the word! We’re looking for a broad range of
participants to create great projects so please share widely. Check out the
