    ASSISTANT RESEARCH SCHOLAR: DIGITAL AND SPECIAL PROJECTS

    The Library of the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World
    (http://isaw.nyu.edu/library) (ISAW) at New York University seeks an
    energetic and creative Assistant Research Scholar to fill a two-year
    position to help plan, coordinate, implement, and maintain a range of
    library projects and digital initiatives. A key component of the ISAW
    Library’s mission is to provide access to and support for new forms of
    digital scholarship, scholarly communication, and pedagogy in the ancient
    studies. The Digital and Special Projects Associate will help the ISAW
    Library fulfill this charge by collaborating with a diverse group of
    academic professionals at ISAW and the NYU Division of Libraries on some or
    all of the following digital projects: the Ancient World Digital Library
    (http://dlib.nyu.edu/ancientworld/) (AWDL); a digital bookplate program; a
    linked-data bibliography of ISAW-affiliated research; digital preservation
    and repository projects for ancient studies scholarship; and instruction in
    a variety of digital tools with the aim of helping ISAW faculty, students,
    and visiting research scholars integrate electronic resources into their
    teaching and research. As a full member of the ISAW Library team, the
    Digital and Special Projects Associate will also have core responsibilities
    in library operations, bibliographic and grant research, public services,
    as well as a central role in all special projects associated with ISAW’s
    print collection or public programming.

    The Digital and Special Projects Associate is a full time, two-year
    appointment in the ISAW Library as an Assistant Research Scholar.

    Under the supervision of the Head Librarian, the Digital and Special
    Projects Associate will:

    – Participate in the planning and implementation of all ISAW Library
    special projects
    – Help create and manage metadata for ISAW digital collections,
    including the Ancient World Digital Library, in accordance with applicable
    international standards and local policies
    – Perform bibliographic analysis and provide other research support in
    connection with collection development and special projects
    – Work closely with colleagues, staff, and faculty to help develop and
    provide high-quality and relevant public services and instruction for the
    ISAW community
    – Participate in all regular operations, activities, and projects of the
    ISAW Library as a full member of the ISAW Library staff

    *Qualifications:*

    *Required*:

    – ALA-accredited MLS or MIS, or a graduate degree in a field related to
    ISAW’s academic mission
    – Minimum one year relevant professional experience
    – Familiarity with metadata in a digital library environment and/or
    traditional MARC-based systems
    – Familiarity with emerging trends in resource description and access
    – Working knowledge of relevant languages of scholarship
    – Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills

    – Intellectual interest and/or formal academic preparation in any of the
    areas of study at ISAW

    – Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
    of mixed professionals in a high-intensity academic environment

    *Preferred*:

    – Experience with library uses of non-MARC metadata schemas, best
    practices, and their applications, such as Linked Open Data (LOD), MODS,
    RDF, and XML
    – Experience with metadata processing, batch-loading, and transformation
    tools such as MarcEdit, Oxygen XML Editor, OpenRefine, XSLT
    – Experience with digital mapping and major tools (e.g., ArcGIS, Google
    Earth)
    – Working knowledge of a non-Western language, with a strong preference
    for Chinese or Russian.

    *The Institute for the Study of the Ancient World: *The Institute for the
    Study of the Ancient World is a unique center for advanced scholarly
    research and graduate education, offering the Ph.D. degree through NYU’s
    Graduate School of Arts and Science. It has a wider geographic span than
    other programs that focus on the ancient world, incorporating not only
    Europe and the entire Mediterranean basin, but also the Near East, and
    Central, South, and East Asia. In its research and its teaching of doctoral
    students, ISAW emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach, one that
    transcends modern boundaries of nation. It supports scholarship that
    crosses customary disciplinary boundaries – art history, literature,
    archaeology, history, geography, geology, economics, and sociology, among
    others – to create a new intellectual framework for understanding the
    ancient world, and to train a new generation of scholars steeped in that
    integrated approach.
