    Hello CCRC,

Please join us at 6:30 in 5409 on Monday, May 6th for a special presentation by Dr. Kimberly Helmer from John Jay who will speak to us about translingual writers. Below you will find a description of the event along with suggested readings provided by Dr. Helmer.

Critical English for Academic Purposes and the Translingual Writing Classroom

Using information gap and jigsaw reading strategies, GC participants will discuss the intersection of critical pedagogy, applied linguistics, and translingual writing practices for multilingual, multicultural classrooms. From the three provided readings, seminar participants will select one which they will introduce and explain to their colleagues in small groups: Each member of the group representing one reading. In plenary, we will discuss how the articles interrelate and can be applied to our own teaching contexts. To conclude, Kimberly Adilia Helmer (John Jay College) will discuss how she has applied these concepts to writing program evaluation, challenging the “service” function of ESL (EAP) writing programs by drawing on student, teacher, and institutional strengths.

Also, remember, on Monday, May 13th we will host Dr. Timothy McCormick who will speak to us about ethnographic research (details to follow).

Thank you all and have a wonderful week,

    Amanda and Andrew
    GCCRC co-chairs
